Make your Personal Cloud with Raspberry Pi and Tonido

Cloud is the new terminology which can provide us plethora of services for example SAAS(Software as a Service), PAAS(Platform as a Service), IAAS(Infrastructure as a Service), etc. Today we use the cloud on daily basis as most of the application are using cloud. Some of the most famous services for storage are icloud, Google Drive, Dropbox and many more. The downside of these services are, that we have to pay a subscription fees for using such services.

I hope that you are aware of Raspberry Pi and have a working Raspberry with Raspbian installed. Now if you want to make your own personal cloud storage service on a raspberry pi, you make follow this blog.

If you are not aware of Raspberry Pi, then please check the blog “What is Raspberry Pi ?” and then to install OS(Raspbian) on Raspberry Pi check the blog “Starting/Booting Raspberry Pi“. You may also purchase a new Raspberry Pi(Purchase single unit or full package[recommended]) from amazon.

Now you have a raspberry pi and an old HDD with a proper internet connection, you can make your personal cloud at your home. With it you can perform all the professional storage, backup services without any subscription fees and an added level of security because the infrastructure and your private data is residing in your home :).

In this tutorial we will use Tornido software to accomplish the above task. You may purchase a 2 TB HDD and use it as your cloud from your laptop, Mobile phones or Tablets from anywhere in the world with a working internet connection and this is very easy to configure on Raspberry Pi.

Note :- Before starting this tutorial, make sure Raspbian is installed and running on your Raspberry Pi.

Installing Tonido on Raspberry pi.

1.Start by updating

sudo apt-get update && upgrade

2.Make a directory for downloading Tonido server software

sudo mkdir /usr/local/tonido

3.Go to this Directory

cd /usr/local/tonido

4.Now download Tonido server

sudo wget

5.Now Untar the file by the following command

sudo tar -zxvf tonido.tar.gz

6.Now run tornado server

./ start

The server should start now. You can login into your local tornado server to configure Tonido as a cloud and use it as a media server locally as well as from the internet.

Use the following link in your browser to enter the setup window.

<your local ip address>:10001<port number>


The setup is very simple. Follow the setup and use tornido by downloading the tonido application from Google play store or App store of apple, the application is absolutely free.
